What is WA Day?

WA Day takes place on the first Monday in June each year and stands as a celebration of all Western Australians. It recognises our deep Aboriginal history, the arrival of early European settlers, and the many people from across the world who have made (and continue to make) Western Australia their home. The day encourages us to reflect on and celebrate the best of who we are: our people, our lifestyle, our culture and the growing potential of our state.

What makes WA Day truly special is the way it brings us together. It’s a moment to appreciate the stories, experiences and communities that shape Western Australia’s identity. Across the state, people gather to acknowledge our shared journey and the values we carry forward – resilience, diversity, creativity and a strong sense of belonging.

More than a public holiday, WA Day is a reminder of the pride we share in the place we call home. It invites us to reconnect with each other, celebrate what makes our state unique, and look ahead to the future we’re continuing to build together.

Did you know?

WA Day was originally called Foundation Day
Before 2012, June 1 was celebrated as Foundation Day, recognising the arrival of the first European settlers led by Captain James Stirling and marking the beginning of settlement in the Swan River Colony.
Foundation Day became WA Day in 2012
In 2012, Foundation Day was officially renamed WA Day after bipartisan support in Parliament, creating an inclusive celebration for all Western Australians - no matter how long they’ve called WA home.
WA Day kicks off with a statewide celebration of excellence
The long weekend begins with the Western Australian of the Year Awards, honouring outstanding individuals who contribute to WA’s growth, spirit and identity.
WA Day festivals occur across the State
Celebrations open up to everyone with free WA Day Festival events held across seven regional areas: Carnarvon, Port Hedland, Geraldton, Newman, Kalgoorlie, Albany and Fremantle.
Perth’s WA Day Festival moved to November
The WA Day Festival has become a major highlight of the celebrations. While regional events continue in June alongside the public holiday, Perth’s festival was shifted to November to avoid winter weather and create a brighter, more enjoyable atmosphere for city celebrations. 2025 marked the second successful November festival, with strong community support.
The Public Holiday Will Move in 2028
From 2028, the WA Day public holiday will shift to the second weekend of November to fully align with the festival. This change reflects the event’s evolution and creates more space for the community to come together and celebrate WA at its best.
Our Festivals Celebrate What Makes WA Unique
Each WA Day Festival is free for everyone to enjoy, offering the very best of our music, food, arts and community. These inclusive events create vibrant spaces for people of all ages to come together and celebrate what makes our state special — with no entry cost at all.
