WA Day Junior Reporter
Give your students the chance to work with 7NEWS at the WA Day Festival this November at Burswood Park – a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to step into the world of TV, storytelling and live media.
The 2026 WA Day Junior Reporter will step into the fast-paced world of live media this November at the WA Day Festival at Burswood Park, going behind the scenes with 7NEWS.
The winning student will have the opportunity to work alongside a 7NEWS journalist, gaining real-world experience as they interview performers, partners and event contributors. They’ll create their own youth-focused content for Seven’s digital platforms and be recognised on stage in front of the WA Day Festival crowd.
Beyond the Festival, the experience continues. The winner and their class will be invited to an exclusive behind-the-scenes experience at 7NEWS Perth, offering a rare look inside a working newsroom and studio environment. This will be delivered as an in-person excursion for metro schools (within a set travel radius), or as a virtual experience for regional and remote schools.
Selected student submissions may also be showcased across Festival screens, featured in a curated “My WA” gallery, and shared across 7NEWS platforms — giving students the chance to have their voice seen and heard right across Western Australia.
The on-site experience will take place during a dedicated 3-hour session at the WA Day Festival, with the winner working alongside a 7NEWS journalist on the day (journalist to be confirmed). Please note: the winner must be able to attend the event in Perth. Travel and accommodation are not included.
Taking part is simple, flexible, and designed to be completed in class with minimal prep.
1. Explore the theme
Use our classroom resources to spark discussion and help students explore what they love most about Western Australia — from their community and culture to the environment and everyday life in WA.
2. Create a response
Each student develops a short, personal story answering the question: “What do you love about WA – and why?”
3. Film the video
Students record a 15–90 second video using a phone, tablet or school device. Videos should be filmed in portrait where possible and include clear audio.
4. Submit the entry
Teachers submit each student’s entry via the form on this page, including all required student and school details.
Video entries can be shared via a Vimeo or unlisted YouTube link (preferred), a shared Dropbox folder, or uploaded directly through the form (maximum file size 250MB).
Entries close: 5pm AWST 30 September 2026.
