The Governor will officially launch WA Week 2009 at a free community event at the Constitutional Centre in West Perth. The public will join teachers and more than 800 students from schools around the State for displays by WA’s peak community service organisations, non-stop games and entertainment and a complimentary sausage sizzle served by Lions and community volunteers. Tidy Towns’ Regional Award Ceremony Pilbara & Kimberley

In 2009 the Tidy Towns - Sustainable Communities' Regional Award ceremonies will be held throughout October in regional Western Australia. To celebrate WA Week and the fortieth anniversary of the program, the Kimberley/Pilbara Regional Award Ceremony will be held in Port Hedland on Monday 19 October 2009. The Tidy Towns program encourages group participation on projects such as recycling, litter prevention, water conservation, and the celebration and protection of natural and cultural heritage values. The theme for this year is: 'Celebrating 40 years of community spirit!'

Spirit of the Streets in Concert

This is an initiative of three choirs combining to draw community attention to the "Spirit of the Streets Choir" (SOS). The SOS draws its membership from the disadvantaged sectors of our community taking in the homeless, persons suffering either physical or mental illness which can also include co morbidity. The event will involve three choirs, The SOS Choir, The Perth Male Voice Choir and the Mercedes College Select Choir working together progressively to develop a program through joint rehearsals to put on a concert at St George’s Cathedral Perth 23 October 2009.

Celebrating Heritage, Culture & Community in Nannup
Nannup Town Hall
The Nannup Town Hall has recently been renovated and the theatre seating repaired to its original state. Prior to WA Week we aim to celebrate the importance of community connectivity and cultural awareness by inviting residents to participate in a pottery workshop to create ceramic tiles that identify the cultural, heritage and social themes of our region. These tiles will be launched during WA Week with a screening of a heritage themed movie in the Town Hall, celebrating the completion of these two projects. The tiles will be incorporated into the streetscape as an expression of cultural identity. This will be the first time that Nannup has celebrated WA Week.

Corrigin Community Resource Centre
The Corrigin Community Resource Centre will celebrate WA Week by inviting various interest groups to a series of open morning tea functions at the Resource Centre. A display will highlight community achievements and a brief presentation will expand these achievements and highlight the services the Resource Centre offers which cater for these groups, Specific morning teas will cater for seniors, Families, Businesses, and Community & Sporting Groups & Hobbyists.

During WA Week we aim to bring this amazing history together with an Open Display of our history including the Miss West Australia cape and crown which will be open to the WA public at The Sir David Brand Centre, 106 Bradford Street Coolbinia (Taxi Stop 3) from Monday 19 to Friday 23 October. The Centre will also host a Special Forget-Me-Not Happy Hour on Monday 19 October at The Centre and invite former Miss WA entrants and key stakeholders to celebrate The Centre’s history and WA Week.

Many families and their children from multicultural backgrounds attend Charthouse Primary School. Garden Island (located off Rockingham) has a rich naval history which goes back to the commencement of settlement of the Swan River Colony. Charthouse Primary School has had a long association with Garden Island/Australian Defense Force. During WA week we wish to broaden our students’ knowledge on West Australian history through WA themed class activities culminating with a WA themed school assembly with guest speakers from the Defense Community Liaison Team and the Rockingham City Council “Act, Belong, Commit” Program. At the conclusion of the assembly the school community will be invited for morning tea and the official opening of the Remembrance Garden and student art display.

The Northam community is currently implementing plans to improve facilities and create a new and vibrant precinct centered on the Old Northam Railway Station. Stage one of the project will see the Railway Station improved, resulting in the most significant structure within the site being transformed into a community facility that will support numerous exciting new activities and purposes. The rationale for creating the Precinct is to preserve and interpret Northam's and the Avon Valley's place in history and the future, and recognise and celebrate the unique culture of the region. This project will host a community open day at the site, inviting all community members to view the future plans and engage in this new development.

The Eastern Goldfields YMCA Outside of School Hours Care Centre uses different theme weeks to educate and inspire children in a range of topics. The "Kalgoorlie West Aussie" week will focus on building children's knowledge and pride about the history and culture of Kalgoorlie and Western Australia. During the week, the following activities will take place: traditional afternoon teas; presentations from local indigenous community members; didgeridoo & bush musical instrument making; cooking bush tucker; indigenous art sessions; an outside wall painting representing Kalgoorlie; traditional folk dancing and games.

The first theatre production to explore the fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) employment culture in Western Australia. When three workmates meet the new safety officer, their lives will never be the same. Community members will travel to the old Mt James Aboriginal Community, 25kms away from the current Burringurrah Community. Historical photos of the different family groups will be displayed and family trees prepare for them. We will provide information on the old Mt James Community and the Burringurrah Community. Various art and craft activities will be provided for the kids including paintings on canvas, paper and boomerangs, and some silk screening with the designs the kids have made. A community BBQ will be held too. The project will bring young and old together to celebrate the past and the present.

The WA Genealogical Society will be holding an Open Day at its Bayswater library to promote its "Who Do You Think You Are" Research Day for West Australians to find their Western Australian family history - from the early Swan River Pioneers 1829-1838, the Convict era and Enrolled Pensioner Guards, the Gold Rush era, shipping, birth, and death and marriage records. Entry will be free for visitors to our library where we will have volunteers to assist and advise on how to find their West Australian family history. All our library resources will be available on the day: books, microfilm, microfiche and digitised as well as through our internet subscription services.

Showcase is a not for profit organisation under the Constitution of Geraldton Regional Schools Arts Festival Inc. Showcase gives the opportunity for Schools, Teachers and Students of the Mid West to display their expertise to both the public and other schools. Showcase is not just a concert but give opportunities to Media Students to produce a DVD of the history and the current performances of Showcase, including reporting, interviewing etc. Art students to assist in Stage Decoration and prop making. Unique to Western Australia, SIDS and Kids WA's Reducing the Risk of SIDS in Aboriginal Communities (RROSIAC) program - will celebrate WA Week by holding a special event to recognise a tradition Aboriginal birthing place along Perth's Swan River. The event will provide the opportunity for discussion of the importance of old and new rites and rituals of child birth, caring for new babies and safe sleeping practices of infants and celebrate the tradition and history of the local Aboriginal community.

In Celebration of WA the Wyndham Community will hold a Celebrate Wyndham Family Fun Day. Many local organisations and individuals will be involved in running this event. The event will run from 2.30-9pm with a tee-ball and softball game and various activities run by Ngnowar_Aerwah Aboriginal Corporation, with an evening concert by local musicians, Rode Worx and the Wyndham Work Camp Band. The event will be held at the Wyndham Town Oval and will be supported by the local Aboriginal organisations, Police, Local Businesses and the local schools. Volunteer services, such as Ambulance and Fire, have also indicated that they will be involved in the event, offering and opportunity to recruit new volunteers for these services.

Multiculturalism & Reconciliation through dance

We are planning a wonderful way of celebrating WA Week by holding a lunch event at Balga Senior High School with all the students. There are over 70 languages at Balga and it will be a wonderful reconciliation event.  The SINSEP indigenous students will perform the dance that the girls and boys have been learning and then the African students will also perform one of their dances. After the performances all students will be included in the activities by being taught the dances. We will could cook a sausage sizzle for the whole school to celebrate multiculturalism and reconciliation. There is also potential for media coverage as Narelda Jacobs (Ch10) is our ambassador and frequently visits Balga School.

Beatball is a 3 on 3 basketball/hip hop dance program targeted at Indigenous and new humanitarian arrivals aged 13 to 17 years located within the areas of Mirrabooka, Nollamara, Balga, Koondoola and Girrawheen. The program takes sport and in this case basketball and hip hop dance back to its purest form where youth plan for fun whilst developing their social, emotional and physical wellbeing within an environment that is non-threatening, makes them feel welcome and promotes friendship and belonging.

Gillingarra Sport & Recreation Club members supported by Shire of Victoria Plains and Mogumber-Gillingarra Bush Fire Brigade, Gillingarra Koojan Land Care District Committee, Mogumber Progress Association & Central West Reference & Action Group will host 15 city based John Curtin Volunteers from 23rd - 25th October 2009 for WA Week. We 'cleanup' the Old School, church, community hall & town site. We provide all meals free at the community hall, billet volunteers with community/farmers & organise social activities (BBQ & Badminton). Locals, struggling, break from challenging farming times to showcase benefits of country living & contribute to sustainable community life (retaining young & old).

To celebrate the farming heritage of this corner of Western Australia the Karridale-Augusta RSL Sub Branch and Karridale Progress Association will host an afternoon of community friendship and reflection at the Karridale Hall. The agricultural land of our shire was created from jarrah and karri forests. Returned servicemen and women played a significant role in this work and in the establishment of the agricultural enterprises that formed the character, culture and economic base of this remote rural part of South Western Australia. We intend to record community members telling stories of farm life and share the resulting film with locals and visitors.

North Perth Primary School celebrates its 110th anniversary in 2009. The anniversary will be marked at a community Open Day on 23 October 2009. Current and former students, staff, parents and community members will be invited to participate in the Open Day, which will include official openings of the 110th Anniversary Sculpture and 110th Anniversary Commemorative Rose Garden, an historic grounds walk, open classrooms showcasing students' work, a time reviewing the school's place in local, national and international history, and a celebration of its multicultural student population. The culmination will be a High Tea provided by the NPPS Parents and Citizens' Association.

'Together we make a difference: Celebrating Youth Leadership in Social Justice'

This will be a day time event bringing together youth from diverse social, economic and cultural communities comprising refugees and migrants, indigenous and non indigenous Australians to celebrate their learning and achievement in social justice for a strong and diverse WA. Activities will highlight student's involvement in promoting unity and a sense of belongingness in WA and mentoring from social justice champions. Activities will include art/story telling; traditional dances, singing, dressing and food. We will provide morning, afternoon tea and traditional food to students, volunteers and social justice mentors. Prizes will be presented for outstanding unity and diversity symbols. A 'WA Week Banner' will be created

Gosnells to Fremantle Guided Day Trip for new migrants to WA
Gosnells to Fremantle (return)
Community members with a refugee and migrant background will be invited to 'get on board' a guided day trip from Gosnells to the historical city of Fremantle as part of a joint initiative between Gowrie WA, the City of Gosnells and Transperth. Participants will receive a journey planning briefing in Gosnells and then get out and about on the public transport network under the guidance of Transperth Staff. The tour aims to increase the understanding and confidence of new arrivals when using public transport as well as providing an opportunity to explore the sights and sounds of iconic Fremantle. A free community picnic is included.

Perth's new aboriginal community radio station - 6NME 100.9fm Noongar Radio would like to celebrate WA Week by honoring our living treasures - the Elders of the Noongar community - with a special Indigenous themed WA Week function. We would like to invite Elders to a bush tucker luncheon at the Noongar owned Kaditj Cafe on Beaufort Street. We will provide light entertainment throughout the lunch and then give our Elders a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of their local radio station.

The official ceremony for the presentation of the annual Tidy Towns awards will be held in Narrogin. Guests will be welcomed by the Narrogin's Mayor Sally Higgins. Representatives from the each of the towns who submitted entries will have the opportunity to showcase their towns. A luncheon will be part of the event.

The Shark Bay Sport and Recreation Association and the Arts Council will work together to bring two events together to celebrate WA Week and the beginning of our Windy Season. On Saturday 24th October, the Shark Bay Arts Council will launch their annual Local Community Art Exhibition, which is held in the Shark Bay Discovery and Information centre gallery. Our community members will be invited to wander through the Discovery museum (a fantastic display of local Shark Bay and Western Australian history and artifacts) while the children can participate in the making, painting and decorating of kites. On Sunday 25th October, the Sports Association will hold a Kite Flying Festival with the newly made kites. It is planned that the day will involve local music and entertainment, including local indigenous music, food and a whole lot of fun!

The remote Aboriginal community of Oombulgurri has undergone many significant changes in the last few months. In January 2009 the community was declared alcohol free (dry) and in July a new Community Council was elected. Celebrate Oombulgurri will be a whole of community celebration of the positive future for the community. Community members will join together to celebrate the past, present and future of the community on the traditional meeting grounds surrounding the community. Activities will include cultural, sporting and craft activities to foster a sense of community pride and belonging.

Community event/sausage sizzle to: Celebrate the reopening of No 8 Pump Station, Dedari to the public following extensive conservation works. Reunite community members who have lived or worked along the water pipeline and/or at No 8 Pump Station. Promote another tourist attraction along the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail to the public/media and highlight Western Australia’s Industrial and gold mining heritage. Collect stories, images & memorabilia relating to the history of the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme (GWSS) and those who operated it for the benefit of future generations.

The longest running active theatre in WA is hosting a film night on 24th October to celebrate Esperance's unique history. Shown will be unique and unshown film footage of Esperance in the 50's and 60's during a time when huge development was taking place in the town. This footage has been created by local archivist Neville Mulgat who has teamed up with the local theatre to premier the 21/2 hour long 'movie'.

Aboriginal women, men and children and non-Indigenous guests attend a two day Culture Camp held at the site of the first contact between Aboriginal and non-Indigenous society in the south eastern Kimberley 70 years ago (October 1939). They engage in a Corroboree of song and dance and, using traditional sand-drawings and modern acrylic painting, they map out the story (and history line) of Indigenous and non-Indigenous society as it has played out in Balgo over seventy years. The elders teach their peoples' history to younger generations. Non-Indigenous participants learn from their hosts.

On Australia Day 2001 four WA police officers were tragically killed in a plane crash in Newman. Three were from the local police station and the pilot from Karratha. This event was and still is the most significant loss of police life in modern day policing history in Australasia. Since 2005 a major fundraising event for WA Police Legacy known as 'The Bloody Slow Cup' happens in Newman where local police and community representatives play rugby union Australia v New Zealand. Other activities occur including a family concert by the WA Police Pipe Band during the week, visits to remote communities and schools by Rugby WA plus the largest Remembrance Ceremony outside the metropolitan area at the actual crash-site on the morning of the game. Madjitil Moorna, the all ages, all races community choir, led by award-winning Aboriginal musicians will sings songs in Aboriginal language at the Zig Zag Festival in Stirk Park Kalamunda on Sunday 25 October. Elders and young people from many parts of WA will be involved in the singing project which will run over 13 weeks, leading to a combined performance at the Festival. On the day, audience members will be encouraged to learn a simple song including Nyoongar language in order to share some words with the first inhabitants of Kalamunda. 'To promote and embrace reconciliation through the multicultural blend of our members' is one of the group's 10 aims. This project will fit perfectly with our Mission Statement written by Auntie Karl Mourach in 2007 and also with the aim to Celebrate WA!
