Grants

To enrich the ANZAC Day experience for Diggers and the wider community Celebrate WA, in partnership with the Government of Western Australia, ran an ANZAC Day Gunfire Breakfast Small Grants Scheme and invited RSL Sub-Branches throughout Western Australia to apply.
‘Gunfire Breakfast’ is a term that was used to describe breakfast in the trenches, where the first meal of the day was taken by the Diggers to the sound of gunfire at dawn. Historical accounts variously describe the breakfast as consisting of merely black coffee laced with rum or a cook up of whatever food was available.
The Gunfire Breakfast has now become an Australian military tradition and a part of ANZAC and other commemorative day programs throughout the nation.
The ANZAC Day Gunfire Breakfast Small Grants Scheme was made possible through funding from the Government of Western Australia and was administered by Celebrate WA in partnership with the RSL. The grants encouraged RSL Sub-Branches to join with other partners and supporters to hold a Gunfire Breakfast for their local community.
The objectives of the Gunfire Breakfast Small Grants Scheme were to:
- Extend and enhance the ANZAC Day experience for Diggers and communities in all regions of Western Australia
- Encourage RSL Sub-Branches to extend their community outreach by bringing together Diggers, families, friends and the local community to share stories, memories and friendship on ANZAC Day
- Foster pride, cooperation, inclusiveness, and identity through strengthening awareness of our ANZAC tradition and heritage
The Gunfire Breakfast Small Grants Scheme applications for the 2010 round of grants can be received from November 2009 and close on Friday 5th March 2010.
