WA Week
WA Week was initiated in June 1972 - first as Local Products Week, then WA Week, then finally West Week.
The first WA Week was held in June 1973 as an initiative that would:
- Emphasise stability
- Create confidence
- Foster pride in the achievements of outstanding Western Australians
- Showcase the history, assets and potential of the State
- Foster a spirit of teamwork and cooperation
- Be a celebration of Western Australia, by Western Australians for Western Australians
The last WA Week was presented in June 1994.
WA Week was re-launched by Celebrate WA in October 2007 to provide people from all regions and sectors with an opportunity to celebrate Western Australia's unique history, heritage and development and applaud individual and collective achievement and contribution.
An October date was selected to include the anniversary of the State's Proclamation Day on 21 October 1890, which marked the transition of Western Australia from a colony under British rule to self-government.
The objectives of WA Week are:
- Develop rewarding and enduring partnerships between all sectors
- Highlight all aspects of Western Australia's achievements and potential
- Promote the State's unique history, heritage and culture
- Foster community pride, confidence and inclusiveness
- Acknowledge accomplishment and contribution.
