What is Oz Concert?
Oz Concert is a unique Western Australian concert introduced on Australia Day 1989 to:
- unify Australians of all backgrounds in shaping our common destiny;
- portray the contemporary face of Australia through the sharing of our culture;
- foster pride and a greater understanding and respect of Australia’s rich cultural heritage; and
- promote and encourage the development of emerging Western Australian artists and art forms.
Over the past 21 years this entertaining and inspiring free icon event has become a significant Australia Day celebration for people in Western Australia, Australia and around the world.
More than 12,000 people apply for free tickets to attend the concert on the eve of Australia Day each year of which 6,000 men, women and children are selected who then travel to Perth from all over the State to see the concert live at Government House. Many thousands more see the event live when it is telecast on the internet.
SBS TV telecast an edited version on more than one occasion following Australia Day.
Oz Concert has the support of all sections of the community including Western Australia’s leading cultural groups and organisations, performers from the wider community, performing arts professionals and students from Western Australia’s leading performing arts senior high schools. More than 100 volunteers of all ages and walks of life contribute to the event each year and provide valuable support on the night of the concert.
Oz Concert is managed by Celebrate WA Inc. A voluntary Oz Concert committee of community and business leaders oversee the appointment of an artisitc production team and presentation of the concert each year.
